MEDITERRANEAN DREAMS

Kenneth Zammit Tabona
January 2022

‘Mediterranean Dreams’, a solo exhibition of watercolours by Kenneth Zammit Tabona, consisted of a series of land and seascapes and ‘fuoridentro’ paintings, that is, compositions showing Mediterranean and Maltese landscapes through an open window or balcony from an interior, typically views from an idyllic location. Gardens and seascapes are visible in the background, while in the foreground are interiors, some more humble than others, that are replete with objects and details, such as Chinese vases, flowers, his black and white pet cat, Ostrich eggs, and more. Kenneth Zammit Tabona’s main inspiration for this series of paintings was his friend Marquis Anthony Cremona-Barbaro’s garden in Tarxien with its red walls that features in a number of his paintings. In Kenneth’s own words, ‘To me the red is something so beautifully Mediterranean. It goes so well. That red which contrasts with the limpid blue skies of Malta and the green – it’s so vivid! It creates such a beautiful splash of colour.’
