INSIDER OUTSIDER : MELLIEHA

Mellieħa - the northernmost village on the island of Malta - served as the main inspiration for this exhibition of paintings by Debbie Bonello and Sarah Calleja. The exhibition is titled ‘Insider Outsider’ because Mellieħa has different nuances for these artists. Debbie Bonello was born and raised in Mellieħa, and, even though she currently does not reside there, she still considers it her hometown, a place she always is still fond of. She is the Insider. Sarah Calleja has different sentiments towards Mellieħa that she knows Mellieħa as an Outsider, as someone who visits Mellieħa for its nature and beaches. Nonetheless, both artists have distinct and very personal memories related to Mellieha that have instigated the places to be portrayed. The two artists have come together to present a collection of paintings in acrylic, oil and watercolour executed in their own distinct styles, and they present the audience with their own take on the sentiments that Mellieħa evokes in them.
